"Game of Thrones" Expands with Multiple Promising Sequel Projects, Confirms Author George R.R. Martin

As the franchise continues to expand, author George R.R. Martin has confirmed that multiple Game of Thrones sequels are in development. Following the conclusion of the original series in 2019, HBO has already launched two prequel spinoff series: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

At the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, Martin disclosed that in addition to the known prequel spinoffs, there are "a sequel or two" in progress. While he did not specify the characters these potential sequel projects would feature, he emphasized that he is collaborating with other professionals on these developments.

The nature of these sequels remains undefined, with uncertainty surrounding whether they will be television series or films. Previously, Kit Harington had been exploring a potential Jon Snow spinoff, which was ultimately discontinued in 2024. Consequently, it is unlikely that the sequels Martin referenced are directly connected to the shelved Jon Snow series.

Warner Bros. reportedly has a Game of Thrones movie in development, though its precise narrative direction remains unclear. Potential sequel concepts include exploring Arya Stark's westward journey, Bran's reign as King of Westeros, or Sansa's role as Queen in the North. Additionally, the possibility of introducing entirely new characters within this expansive universe remains open.

Given that Martin has not yet completed the final novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, there are no definitive literary guidelines for potential sequel narratives. However, the franchise continues to expand with multiple prequel projects, including Aegon's Conquest, The Golden Empire, The Sea Snake, and 10,000 Ships.

With House of the Dragon renewed for season 4 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms secured for a second season, HBO's Game of Thrones portfolio remains robust through 2028. Despite the focus on Targaryen-centric stories, there is significant audience demand for diverse and innovative sequel narratives that can further expand the franchise's storytelling potential.
