Peaky Blinders Sequel Series Confirmed At Netflix With Multi-Season Order

A sequel to Peaky Blinders is in the works at Netflix.  The popular period drama is prepping to make a comeback with The Immortal Man, a highly anticipated Netflix movie.  Although it does not have a release date just yet, the film will bring back several familiar faces and resume the tale of the titular crime gang.  The premiere is planned for next year. Franchise creator Steven Knight wrote the screenplay for the film, which stars the likes of Cillian Murphy, Rebecca Ferguson, and Stephen Graham.  But as teased by Knight in the past, that won't be the end of the wildly successful British saga.

Peaky Blinders

Netflix reveals that Peaky Blinders is coming back to TV with a two-season sequel, each consisting of six episodes.  Hailing from the BBC and Netflix, Murphy will executive produce alongside Knight.  The sequel will air on BBC One in the U.K. and Netflix globally.

The story will pick up after the Peaky Blinders movie, with the sequel series expected to follow a new generation of characters.  Casting and further details will be announced later.  However, in the logline, included below, the setting and story of the sequel are revealed and confirm a post-WWII focus:

“Britain, 1953.  After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel.  In a new era of Steven Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions.  This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and danger, with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”

Knight expressed his excitement for what he described as a "new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story" in response to the unexpected announcement. His full statement can be read below, alongside responses from Mona Qureshi, who oversees the project for Netflix, and BBC Drama's Lindsay Salt:

Knight: “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story.  Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz.  The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”

Qureshi: “We couldn’t be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders with our wonderful partners at Kudos, Garrison Drama and the BBC.  There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family.”

Salt: “This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas.  Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham.”

What This Means For Peaky Blinders

Directed by Tom Harper, who helmed crucial Peaky Blinders episodes early in the show's run, Immortal Man is a closely-guarded secret, but it is expected to pick up where the crime series left off in many ways.  This news means that the movie will at least partly serve as a bridge to the upcoming sequel series.  It will probably guarantee that returning fans will know what to expect next. Knight does note that the newly-revealed series will focus on the next generation of Shelbys.  The film may serve as a passing of the torch between Murphy's iconic Thomas Shelby and the next protagonist, ensuring that connective line between the beloved original drama and its next iteration.  That is left wide open, since the original's finale was ultimately triumphant for Murphy's character.

The original ran for six seasons, making the Peaky Blinders cast household names.  Many people consider it to be one of the best dramas on current television. It is a tall task for the new generation to live up to.  However, with the close involvement of Knight and Murphy, there's reason to be excited about the next phase in the crime drama's evolution.
