Although a new season of House of the Dragon isn't quite as big of an event as a new season of Game of Thrones, it is still a huge show for HBO, and the release date for the third season has been revealed.
The third season of House of the Dragon has concluded filming, and the show will now begin post-production. Casey Bloys of HBO previously stated that House of the Dragon would air just outside the Emmy window that ends on May 31, 2026; consequently, June is most likely the release date. Does that correspond to the latest information? Now, we can verify: The first season ended filming in February 2022, and the show debuted in August 2022. The second season began filming in August 2024 and concluded in September 2023.
That amounts to a gap of 8.5 months between the first season and the second. If we stick with six months of post-production, that would be sometime in April, prior to the start of summer. However, an additional eight months would bring it to, you guessed it, June 2026; consequently, the most recent information bolsters, if not nearly confirms, the notion that the show will premiere in that month. That would result in a gap between seasons of 22 months, which is slightly less than the two years that separated seasons 1 and 2. Sadly, that is somewhat typical these days for a big-budget movie like this.
There are a few more things we know about House of the Dragon's third season and beyond: The number of episodes in season 3 will be eight, the same as in season 2, but fewer than in season 1. It will begin with the Battle of the Gullet, which, according to some producers, was actually meant to be the conclusion of season 2, which is why that ended somewhat abruptly. This season is expected to feature four major Fire and Blood events, including that one. Although Season 4 has already been approved, it will be the series' last. merely bringing an end to the source material, not really cancelled. George R. R. Martin has publicly and repeatedly criticized the changes they made to his story.
The show that will air prior to House of the Dragon's third season is something George R. R. Martin is pleased about.
That would be the novelization of his Dunk and Egg works, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It will be available for purchase on January 18, 2026, roughly six months prior to House of the Dragon. Because it is not intended to be a limited series, it is likely to air a second season in the time between House of the Dragon seasons 3 and 4, and it may continue after that.
There are a number of other shows based on Game of Thrones in the works, but it can be hard to keep track of what has been cancelled and what is still going on at any given time. We currently have two.
